Are You Too Old to Buy Life Insurance?

Author: jglanzman | Filed under: Uncategorized

If you’re a senior citizen, it’s a mistake to buy a life insurance policy before you weigh the costs of coverage against the benefits it will provide for you and your heirs. When you’re an adult with a spouse, young children or others who depend on you, it makes sense to have a policy that will replace your income if you die. As you age, however, life insurance quotes can become prohibitively high.

Is there ever a point when life insurance is so expensive that it’s no longer is appropriate?

“The short answer is yes,” says Matt Rowles, a director in advanced marketing for individual life insurance at Prudential Financial. “Old age and poor health will certainly drive up the cost of insurance. If it drives it to a point where it makes little financial sense, that is probably the point where life insurance is not appropriate.”

Sometimes its best to take a step back, take a deep breath, and totally assess the situation. Luckily for you, were here to help you in every sense of the word. Contact us to review your life insurance plans and any other questions you may have regarding the insurance industry.

English Man Killed During Wildlife Adventure

Author: jglanzman | Filed under: Uncategorized

Daily Mail- A man found dead in a remote mountain hut was an adventurer who had planned a year-long Bear Grylls-style survival challenge in the Scottish wilderness. David Austin, 29, from Derby, was found dead in a ‘bothy’ by a track worker near Corrour. His body is believed to have been lying there for several weeks when it was discovered. A post-mortem found there were no suspicious circumstances behind his death, which is understood to have been as a result of hypothermia. In November, Mr Austin had told his  family he was heading north to live rough off the land – something for which survival expert Bear Grylls has become famous. He is believed to have attended several courses in outdoor survival and bushcraft skills over the past couple of years in order to realise his dream, despite being urged by  family and friends to reconsider his plans.

I can only hope man was smart enough to increase his life insurance policy before he began his challenge. Life insurance is selfless gift to those you love. Contact us today to make sure all your policies are in order.

Frozen Pipe Prevention

Author: jglanzman | Filed under: Uncategorized

As temperatures drop below freezing, many homeowners face the inconvenience and expense that comes with frozen water pipes. Here are some tips on how to prevent these inconveniences from happening.

How to prevent frozen pipes

• Pipes that have frozen in the past or near exterior walls are obvious candidates for special attention.
• Insulate areas where vulnerable pipes are located.
• When insulation isn’t enough, consider pipe wrappings embedded with electrical coils (heat
tape) that provide an outside source of heat.
• Remove hoses from outside yard faucets. The faucets can’t drain properly with a hose
attached and will freeze and break if the hose is left attached.
• Turn outside faucets off from inside the home using the isolated shut-off for exterior faucets.
• During severe cold weather, resist the urge to lower your thermostat to save money while
you are gone for the day.
• Open the doors to kitchen and bathroom cabinets under your sinks so heat from the room
will help warm the pipes.
• Running water doesn’t freeze very readily. During severe cold weather, keep water trickling
out of faucets or spouts attached to vulnerable pipes.
• If you have a sprinkler system, drain all outdoor pipes and turn off the water supply to the
system.
• Know where your main water emergency shut-off valve is located.

Massive Internet Blackout Tomorrow over SOPA

Author: jglanzman | Filed under: Uncategorized

ABC News – Do not try to look up “Internet Censorship” or “SOPA” or “PIPA” on Wikipedia, the giant online encyclopedia, on Wednesday. SOPA and PIPA are two bills in Congress meant to stop the illegal copying and sharing of movies and music on the Internet, but major Internet companies say the bills would put them in the impossible position of policing the online world. Wikipedia’s founder, Jimmy Wales, says his site will go dark for the day on Wednesday, joining a budding movement to protest the two bills. Other sites, such as Reddit and Boing Boing, have already said they would go dark on Wednesday. And some of the biggest names online, including Google, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, have vocally opposed the proposed legislation, though they have not said they are joining the online blackout. Google today said it would highlight the issue with a link Wednesday on its home page in the U.S. “Like many businesses, entrepreneurs and web users, we oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue websites without asking American companies to censor the Internet,” said a Google spokesperson.

I cant even imagine what it would be like without a free internet. Nobody likes restrictions and I doubt this is going to get much suport, besides in Congress. Tune into Newbridgeblog for more info to come.

Bayshore School to Monitor Obesity

Author: jglanzman | Filed under: Uncategorized

BAY SHORE, N.Y., Jan. 15 (UPI) – A group of Bay Shore, N.Y., school students will soon be wearing a watch-like device that allows school officials to track how active they are, officials say. The devices are called Polar Active monitors and they count heartbeats, detect motion and even track students’ sleeping habits in an effort to combat obesity, the New York Post reported Sunday. “It’s a great reinforcement in fighting the obesity epidemic. It tells kids, in real time, ‘Am I active? Am I not active?’ We want to give kids the opportunity to become active,” said Bay Shore athletics chairman Ted Nagengast. The monitors are distributed by Polar Electro, of Lake Success, the U.S. division of a Finland firm. They cost $90 each. School districts in St. Louis and South Orange, N.J., already use the devices, which has raised some privacy concerns, the Post said. “When you get into monitoring people’s biological vital signs, that’s a pretty intrusive measurement,” said Jay Stanley, of the American Civil Liberties Union. “There are key privacy interests at play.”

I wonder if we will start seeing these in the insurance world. These bracelets could be a guideline for life insurance policies

The Scoop on Snow Shoveling Safety

Author: jglanzman | Filed under: Uncategorized

The good news is that 15 minutes of snow shoveling counts as moderate physical activity, according to the Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health (1996). We all should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity of some kind on most days of the week. A 170-pound person shoveling for 30 minutes will burn about 250 calories. Brisk walking or social dancing are other ways to fit in moderate physical activity during cold winter months.

The bad news is that researchers have reported an increase in the number of fatal heart attacks among snow shovelers after heavy snowfalls. This rise may be due to the sudden demand that shoveling places on an individual’s heart. Snow shoveling may cause a quick increase in heart rate and blood pressure. One study determined that after only two minutes of shoveling, the heart rates of sedentary men rose to levels higher than those normally recommended during aerobic exercise.

Shoveling may be vigorous activity even for healthy college-aged students. A study performed by researchers at North Dakota State University determined that, based on heart rate, shoveling was a moderately intense activity for college-aged subjects most of the time but was vigorous activity during about one-third of their shoveling time of 14 minutes. The weather can make shoveling more difficult. Cold air makes working and breathing hard, which adds some extra strain on the body. Shovelers also are at risk for hypothermia, a decrease in body temperature, if they are not dressed correctly for the weather conditions.

This information is not meant to scare you into going out and buying a snow blower. Homeowners on Long Island usually don’t have that much driveway and sidewalks so the task is not that demanding. If snow should turn to ice, be very careful and remember to lay down salt for walkers. Its absolutely crucial to make sure your homeowners insurance is updated. Enjoy the snow.

ABC - On Saturday, Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that a drunk driver fleeing the scene of a prior accident struck and killed a 53-year-old Sarasota woman while she was walking her dog. The driver of the vehicle, Blake C. Talman, 22, lost control of his Nissan Altima and hit Donna L. Chen and her dog Barney on a city sidewalk. Chen was killed in the accident, and Talman is facing DUI manslaughter charges while being held on $121,000 bail. The accident took place on State Road, and Barney was so terrified that he fled the scene, made his way to the beach, and swam for the horizon. Most would expect that to be the tragic end to an already sorrowful tale, but fate had other plans for Barney. A local fisherman in his kayak happened upon the waterlogged dog just as he was pulling far away from shore – likely too far to make it back.

This just goes to show that dogs are man’s best friend. Accidents happen when you least expect it and its important to make sure you don’t leave a mess for your loved ones. Contact us today to make sure your life insurance policy is in order.

Alabama Wins BCS National Championship

Author: jglanzman | Filed under: Uncategorized

With a smothering display of old-school football, No. 2 Alabama blew out the Tigers 21-0 in the BCS championship game Monday night, celebrated a bit and headed back to Tuscaloosa with its second national title in three years.

The Crimson Tide also claimed the top spot in the final Associated Press poll for the eighth time, tying Notre Dame for the most of any team in college football. Coach Nick Saban’s team was an overwhelming choice with 55 of 60 first-place votes.

“We knew what we were capable of,” offensive lineman Barrett Jones said. “I guess that’s kind of arrogant, but it’s the way we felt. We felt like we were capable of dominating, and we did that.”
